DESTINFM SCOREBOARD SHOW
Welcome, sports fans, to the Destin FM scoreboard show. I am your host, Rich Canyonas. First and foremost, I am absolutely beyond thrilled and honored to be part of the Destin FM family. And every week, we want to give you, the sports fan, the best local sports coverage around regarding high school teams, local colleges, minor league teams, semi-pro, and of course the pro teams in and around the surrounding area. And every Tuesday and Thursday on Surfs Up in the Morning, we'll have the latest on the Destin FM 60 second scoreboard, which is a little more of a rapid fire look, recap previews of what's to come. All right, with that being said, let's get it rolling. We'll start on the high school boys baseball at Diamond, and we'll start in our backyard with Destin High School. They dropped to 12 and 3 overall. They suffered a very tough 11-1 loss to the Chipley Tigers. The Sharks, really a hot team from the plate as they entered that contest, having scored no less than 10 runs in four games. So offense was the key for this squad thus far this season. Tigers pitching, though, very tough in a win, holding them to one run with the win. The Tigers moved to 10 and 7. Their offense, as I mentioned, really been in a groove. They have won seven games this season by five or more runs. Destin will clash with Northville on Thursday. We will have an update next weekend on the show. Side note on this one, the Chiefs have averaged an impressive seven runs per clip this season. As for Chipley, they'll face off against Tellico Plains at 5.30 p.m. next Tuesday. Fort Walton started off the week looking to end a road skid. It did not happen. They lost their seventh road game falling to Navarre. The Raiders won that one 5-4. They are much better than their 4-13 marks. Speaking of Fort Walton, having lost two straight games by one run. So it's all about closing these games late and uh going to the pen and trying to preserve these leads. Uh offensively, though, what a season Canon Wilbur has had thus far. He's been steady at eight to plate. Two for five with a stolen base, one run, one riby in the loss. Griffin Kahn has also been fantastic. He collected a pair of hits in the setback. The junior, who also plays quarterback and wide receiver on the school's football team, is hitting a scorching 333 on the season. Ford Wallon has a one and eight mark on the road. They do much better at home. 3-4 in front of their home crowd. They score four runs of contest in front of the faithful. Both teams were in action Thursday night with Ford Walton beat squaring off against Pine Forest. And the Raiders taking on Gulf Breeze. We'll have a full recap again early next week as well. Well, how about this? South Walton, they are rolling as they took on pace. This was a clash, a battle of two of the state's top teams this past Tuesday. The Seahawks wasn't even a contest. They routed them 11-0, and they might be getting used to some of these big wins. Their hitters have been hot. They won seven games by six or more runs, have one of the most potent lineups in the entire state. And how about senior slugger, the right-handed stud, the ace, the hurler, Coleman Borthwick, who has been a stud at the plate with the bat and on the mound. He picked up the win after tossing five innings, a one-hit ball, struck out seven. He's got 24 K's over his last three outings. He has been as steady as they come at the plate. Oh, by the way, he went a pitcher perfect three for three with a home run, two ribbies, and one double. That's the most hits he's posted since back in February. Vaughn Howard also had a hand at the plate. He had a very good night in that one. He got on base in all four of his plate appearances, swiped a couple bags, scored two runs, added a pair of ribbies as well. South Walton moved to 15 and 3. They have won three straight on the road, thanks in large part to their pitching. They've surrendered just four runs over their last three games. They're going to be a tough team going forward. As for pace, their loss ended a nine-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14 and 3. Both squads are going to have to hit the road in their upcoming contest. South Walton will head out to challenge Lincoln at 6 p.m. on Friday. As for pace, they'll take on Crestville Thursday night. We'll recap that one next week as well. Entering that game, just a little side note, the Bulldogs pitching crew has allowed 4.1 runs per game this season. Speaking of Crestville, they dropped a 6-2 affair to Milton earlier in the week. They're hitting around 200. They got to do a better job, have a little more patience, add to plate. They need that offense to get up and go and wake up. Pitching held up, only allowing 3.9 runs per game this season. They started the season 4-0. And as I mentioned, they had pace Thursday night, and they'll host Niceville Friday night. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. Niceville has had some momentum, ripping off three straight wins, four of six, including back-to-back triumphs over Gulf Breeze, in which they scored a total of 17 runs. Now, you go back to that 12-6 win. We talk about the hot bats across the state. How about Ryder Hutcherson? He went three for four, three ribies, one stolen base. Uh listen, this team right now, they're hitting the lights out, and they're doing an excellent job showing patience at the plate. Niceville's record is currently 13-5. 3-0, very solid 3-0 in district play. As for Gulf Breeze, they sit with a 10-8 mark. Rocky Bayou, Christian Academy, they look to make it two straight wins when they take on Gulf Point Latin Gladiators. RBCA snap the four-game side. They won five straight. Their offense has woken up. This is a staggering stat that I put up. 37 runs over the last four contests. Are you kidding me? All wins, including a 9-8 triumph over North Haven earlier in the week. And again, I feel as though this is kind of the theme of the show with these offensive players crushing the ball at the plate. How about junior Elijah Chapman? He's batting 429 on the season in 11 games. Senior Tran Scott has put together a wonderful campaign, hitting a very solid 325. He's uh 1-1 on the mound. As a team, the Knights are batting a staggering 419 on the season. Now, two straight home games, including Thursday's contest against Gulf Point Latin Gladiators, and then coming up Monday against a very struggling 3-11 Ponce de Leon squad. Softball now. Destin girls look to snap a three-game skid. They'll face as can be a Friday night in a non-conference game. First pitch is slate at 4-6. The Sharks are coming off a 4-3 loss to Freeport Tuesday. They've got to attack those hitters early. They cannot get behind and start chasing runs. They've given up 15 runs over the last three. They just need to settle in a little bit. And they enter this one off a very tough 4-3 loss to Freeport. Fort Wallon Beach dropped an 8-1 contest to Kniceville earlier in the week. The Vikings haven't had much luck with the Eagles recently, as this team has come up short the last six times they have met. So it's been a lopsided series of late. Fort Walton sits at 2-8. Niceville pushed their mark to 8-5. They won six straight on the road, dating back to last season. So Road Warriors, if you will. Niceville will host Crestville at 6 p.m. That'll be next Tuesday. South Walton had a very good week starting Tuesday. They cruised to a 14-6 win over the Walton Braves. Their bats are scorching as well. They won five games by seven or more runs so far this season. And how about the sisters? Zoe Krenus was incredible, going a perfect five for five with a home run, five ribies, and three runs. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Tatum turned around. Why not? Another key player. Three of four, two ribies and one run. So both of them some bragging rights. South Wallins' record now sits at eight and one. They have played marvelous softball throughout the course of the season. As for Wallen, they dropped their second, and now they sit with a four and six mark, and it was their fourth straight loss at home. Crestville fell short against Milton, 3-2 in extras. They have dropped three straight. They sit with a five and five mark. As for Milton, their win was their 10th straight at home. Dating back to last season, they pushed their record to 8-3. Looking ahead, Crestville is going to take part in a tournament against North Jackson. 7 p.m. on Friday. As for Milton, they'll take on Northville in a tournament on Friday. Well, you want to be nice? Why not? Niceville. Let's go down to Niceville for a moment. They erupted for eight runs and a win over for Walton Beach. They got great support from their staff on the mound. Chloe Bailey was absolutely unhittable. Seven innings on the mound. How about the stat line for the young lady, allowing one run on two hits? She struck out nine. She has been a strikeout machine. If you don't know this name, remember it. She has over 100 K's already this season. She had 266 last season as a sophomore. Are you kidding me? She's seven and four this season. In three years, she has already won 21 games. And oh, by the way, she has slugged six homers this season, too. Rocky Bayou, they are rolling. They take on Pensacola Catholic Friday at 6 p.m. They won four in a row. They scoring bunches as well. They jump on pitching early. They enter Friday's game with a solid 6-2 overall record. They won three straight on the road. They've scored 16 runs a clip during that streak. Wow. College now and Northwest Florida baseball bounced back in a big way Sunday using a strong offensive showman to take down Tallahassee 11-5 and earn a split in the two-game set after Friday's loss. The Raiders struck early in the second frame. They played at three runs to grab control. Orlando Fernandez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run. Hunter Tetrarski followed with a two-run single, making it 3-0, and they cruise from there. They'll take on Chipotle College Thursday and Saturday. Well, how about this on the diamond? Not on the gridiron, but on the diamond. Auburn travels to Alabama Friday night, the first of a three-game weekend set. After winning 12 straight to Tigers recently, snapped a two-game slide, courtesy of a 10-0 thumping over South Alabama. Tigers are 20-4 overall. Tied are 19-7. And oh, by the way, another nice little side note, congrats to Alabama hurler, Tyler Fay. He was named the College Baseball Foundation pitcher of the week. The organization announced this on Tuesday. The Redshirt Jr. was recognized for his historic evening back on March 20th against then number 18 Florida, recording the ninth no-no, the ninth no-hitter in Alabama program history. Congratulations to that young man. Excellent job. Hey, tennis, anyone? The number one University of West Florida men's tennis team defeated Harding University 5-2 on Tuesday at the Ralph Skeeter Carson Tennis Complex. The Argonauts swept all three double matches. They won four of six singles matches. They have now won 11 straight matches. Back to baseball for a minute for you minor league fans out there. Pensacola Blue Wahoos don't open up their season at home as they host Montgomery for a three-game set. We are probably a couple days away from that to get into a little more of their season and a preview of it. But that three-game set will be April 3rd to the 5th. March Madness, a little more of a recap next week regarding the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, as well as a focus on the April's NFL's draft and what moves the Saints, Jags, Bucks, Dolphins are going to make. And again, if you guys are kind of looking at some of these sites out there like Tankathon, the Saints sit with the number eighth pick. Miami is 11 and Tampa is 15. All right.
