Welcome everyone into another edition of the Destin FM scoreboard show. I'm your host, as always, Rich Kinoneas. And we always want to thank you guys for keeping us tuned, locked in. So we know that you know, obviously, high school graduations come and gone, kids are getting ready for college, and really not too much to report. Uh, locally, there were a couple of new hires, if you will. Uh, if you want to start in our backyard, uh, Destin High School announced Gerard Hall as their new head softball coach, a very highly respected AAU coach, brings a ton of experience on and off the field. Uh, he said, quote, this is through the immediate release via the high school. I am beyond grateful, humbled, completely honored to have the opportunity to impact the lives of students, both in the classroom and on the field, he said. In many ways, finding a way to help teach mentor students has been the storyline and purpose of my life. Making ripples that support the game and the lives of children for years to come is what truly matters. Uh, they are still looking for an additional assistant coach as well in the softball program. Um, and that's something you want to hear, right? When we talk about community being invested, being entrenched, uh, and having that type of experience. I mean, that's that's what you look for. That's really what you look for. Like at the end of the day, you know, these these coaches' jobs are to come in and first and foremost, you got to win games. And we know that the sharks struggled, they were 12 and 15. Uh, the offense sputtered a little bit. They were a very good home team. They had issues on the road, just three and seven on the road, and at home, they were seven and five. And if you go back to their season that just ended, you know, it was kind of a mixed bag. You know, they had a long losing streak, they were able to snap it. Then uh they picked up a nice one against Freeport, then they got blanked by North Bay Haven Academy. Um, but they're a team that has talent and younger players coming back and they're vested and they're gonna be on the rise. So, first and foremost, you got to win games. That silence the critics. That that makes the parents happy, the boosters happy, the high school happy, right? And you got to teach, you got to be a mentor. You're helping these kids get to the next level, which is college. And if they play, that's great. But more importantly, help them get an education. Guide them, mentor them. That's really what it's all about. Uh, we know the wins and losses are so tough to come by, right? It's just the nature of high school sports, especially in the panhandle, especially in our backyard. It really is tough. You got to win games, period. Uh, but we are seeing, as I mentioned, there's a lot of uh summer activity going on with some of the uh local schools. I know Crestview and Baker, they've been doing a lot, Walton, uh, with basketball, getting the reps in, which is always good to see. Uh, you know, nothing. I'll say this, as far as uh what we're looking to do going forward as we are fast approaching July, we put in some calls to uh a bunch of different athletic directors and head coaches from the various high schools. We're going to try to um get them on the air for a couple minutes as well, but we wanted to pop on on this Friday, as we typically do, even for a few, just get you caught up to speed the news and notes. Uh, as far as modern league baseball, we talk a lot about the wahoos during the week on the Destin FM 62nd scoreboard show. They've been a mixed bag as well. Like you can't figure out the Wahoos, you just can't. Now, if you follow modern league baseball, it's kind of unique because they're always going to have Mondays off and they're always gonna have six-game series. So you go back early June, they uh have a homestand against Chattanooga, and it was so hit and miss, right? They get the win in the opener five to four, bats come alive late, but then they drop three straight, the offense is stagnant. They score two runs and three losses, they bounce back with a win in game five, and then they get absolutely trumped in the final of the series 10-1. Now they go on the road, Columbus. So you had the postponed game on Tuesday. They split Tuesday's, I'm sorry, on Tuesday, they split Wednesday's action. Uh they had a nice win Thursday, 6-5. They'll clean up the series later on tonight, Saturday and Sunday, and then back to Birmingham. That's been a thorn in their side. But the one thing I do like about the Wahoos, uh, family front, very, very inexpensive, cost effective. They do a great job getting the community involved because they have so many different promotions. Like every single solitary game at home is a promotion, and they've got some talent. They've got some talent this year. They just need to figure out a way to kind of put it all together. They really do. I mean, if you really haven't, if you've been following him, Dylan Lewis has been on fire. I mean, he is the spark plug. I mean, he's got a uh he's got pretty good offense. Uh, he's batting around 236, but he's got 12 home runs. So he's kind of like the power right there. Uh Trimble, that we talked a little bit about, we spotlighted him about a week or so ago. Decent player, 264. You know, he's a doubles machine. Uh, they just need to figure out their pitching. They got to be much more consistent when it comes to their offense. That's always kind of been the bugaboo. SEC, I think the big story in college football the past week was what's going on with Texas Tech. And that's something that we talked a lot about, even on my show during the week on Q. So Oklahoma, their AG basically came out and calls on the Big 12 to suspend the signal caller of Texas Tech. Now, if you haven't followed the story, Texas Tech, Texas Tech quarterback Brandon Soresby has basically been given uh, I guess you can say uh I don't want to say immunity, but he has uh he has an obvious gambling problem. And they are still allowing him to play games this upcoming season, which let's just call for what it is, you're opening up Pandora's box. I mean, I I hate the fact that um they're allowing this, and Texas Tech officials, you cannot defend this kid. And you lose the integrity if you allow this kid to play, and I understand the NCAA appealed the injunction, okay? Um now he does have to sit out their first two games, but he's gonna be under center going forward. This is a player that bet on games on Indiana when he was with Indiana. He bet on sporting events, he bet on college football, he bet on his own team. The integrity, the line of demarcation, it's been crossed. You can't allow this kid to play college sports because you have no idea if he's gonna be on the take if he's betting on games, if he's throwing games. I understand the hypocrisy of the NCAA. I understand that the NCAA doesn't want to get their hands dirty. They're already in bed with sports betting and gambling. You already got your hands dirty. This is your lot in light. You gotta lay down now with fleas. You just have to. But it's a bad look. It's a bad look, and there's a reason some of these universities don't want to play Texas Tech because they believe the outcome's already decided. Now, I will say this they open, I think, against Abilene Christian. Are you gonna tell me for one minute that they're not gonna take a payday from Texas Tech? You just can't allow a player in college, even though you get a Texas judge to clear him, which is a disgrace. But you can't allow a player in college who is a freshman in 2022 at Indiana and comes out and says, yeah, sports wagering. That was me. 40 bets on the team I play for. Does anyone else see a problem with that? That is a major red flag. First and foremost, this kid has an issue with gambling. But I believe Christian, they open up, Texas Tech does before they hit the road against Oregon State. They're gonna take the money. They're not gonna say we don't want them on the schedule. You know it, and I know it. So the NCAA definitely has a problem on their hands. By the way, speaking of college, shout out, shout out Millinghouse, Northwest Florida State, Crestview native. Uh Jersey Shore, the team that I call games for. Uh Jersey Shore got the win over Baltimore. Frederick got the win over Virginia. Chadelle Millinghouse plays for Frederick. He's averaging about 18. He is a Crestview native. He went to Northwest Florida State. He has played overseas. So now they take on Capitol. Jersey Shore battles New York. Those two winners will play Sunday. We want to throw that out there. And speaking of hoops, how about my Knicks? I saw there were watch parties. I think it was over at uh AJ's. I mean, God bless you guys if you were checking out that watch party. The Knicks down 29 against the Spurs, game four of the NBA Finals, and they come all the way back. Uh the refereeing and the officiating has been horrible in these NBA finals. It has altered and influenced these NBA finals, but these have been the most watched games in years. And the Knicks have an opportunity to go on the road in San Antonio, close it out. I love their chances. Uh, I talked a lot about this during the week. Wemby is a talented, great player, but he's a dirty player for San Antonio. And how about him coming out Friday with the bold proclamation? You know, we're basically coming back from 3-1 down. Everyone knows it. We're going to win. So you got to like that confidence, do you not? NBA Finals has been fantastic. NHL Stanley Cup Finals have been really entertaining. Uh, whether you're a hockey fan or not, there's high drama when you talk about championships. There's high drama in the Stanley Cup Finals, especially when you go into Southern Death in overtime. And the series has been entertaining from the first drop of the puck between Carolina and Vegas. And right now, Carolina got the win on Thursday night. They can close out the Golden Knights with a win on the road on Sunday. So, as I said, you know, not too much locally because the high schools, you know, it's kind of like a breathing period for the high schools. The athletes are still going to get in there, stay in shape. Some players have committed to colleges. Sometimes you get that late commitment, which is pretty cool. I always like that, right? Because uh they will commit and they still have their senior season coming up. So it's like added bonus, a little more incentive. That's always fun to watch because you want to see, you just want to make sure they get out of their senior season unscathed. God forbid you never want any players that sign letters of intent um to get hurt. Now, shout out Crestviews, uh, Zai Tin committed to play football at Wake Forest. That is a big time college, man. So he'll be a senior. Also, uh, I think um uh who else? Uh I think uh Terry Jackson might have committed. I'll give you a little more updates on that later on, or I should say next week. But that's great, that's fantastic. I mean, these kids, you know, they play these sports uh from when they're little, whether it's Pop Warner, AAU, you know, they're lucky enough to not move around, stay in one place, go to high school, be a four-year starter, have an opportunity to continue their education and play college football, play college sports. That's awesome. Absolutely awesome. I mean, God bless them. That's what it's all about, right? And it's one of the reasons that we do our daily 60-second scoreboards, uh, you know, our Destin FM 60 second scoreboard, which by the way, you can hear during the week multiple times, Monday to Friday, wake up with my guy Billy Surf and the gang in the morning. You'll catch that multiple times, and then the Destin FM scoreboard show. So it's a little more of a long form show. Once we get in July and August and we get these coaches on, we're gonna be rolling right into the fall with football. Oh, it's gonna be absolutely crazy. We can't wait. We're gonna try to get some players on too. I know it's tough. You know, we want them to hit the books first and foremost, but we're gonna try to get them on as well. Uh, we've got the also uh sports betting pod, which is a clean pod, meaning we're not chilling, we're just giving you objective opinions on the lines and the movement. Uh that's called back your play. That'll start to re-air in August uh with college football right around the corner. But the SEC situation is really interesting to watch because, as I mentioned, some of these colleges are not going to say no to Texas Tech. Uh, and you got to just be careful here because you just don't want that to kind of seep in across the board when it comes to college sports. You don't. It's bad enough, you know, the pros we've seen it, gambling influence, right? And college sports betting is illegal in over 30 states. So in California, wagering on college games, including prop bets on individual player performances, is illegal at regulated sports books. And the reason this story is so big with Soresby is let's just say you go to one of the aforementioned gambling apps, right? Bet365, Live 365, BetMGM, Fandle, DK, DraftKing, whatever. These are not pops, free plugs for these guys. I'm just giving you sports app, you know, betting app 123 ABC. And let's say Soresby's passing yards is 250 and it says ONU, which is overunder. So if you never bet before, that's called a player prop. It's a prop bet. So what the books are saying or where you're placing a potential bet is do you believe that Sores B will throw for more than 250 yards? If you do, he goes over that, hence the over. Do you believe Sores B will throw for under 250 yards? That's the U for under. So it'll give you either plus, negative, minus money. Let's say I bet $10 that I believe he will throw for over 250 passing yards. Now, why is that a foolish bet? Because I'm dealing with a player that's been known to bet on his own team. Now, why does that hamstring the NCAA and calls into question the integrity of the game? Because if he's sitting at 249 yards and it's late in the game, and he drops back to pass on third down and has a wide open wide receiver 10 yards down the field and airbags it into the stadium and they punt, and then the other team basically comes back and they just run out the clock. I lost a bet. He can influence the outcome when it comes to player props. That's the problem I have. We will get into that a lot more over the next several weeks. So the NCAA really is going to have to figure out what the heck they're going to do. And plus, when you have judges in Texas in the back pocket of the university, that's a no-no as well.
