SPEAKER_00

Welcome into another edition of the Dustin FM Scoreboard Show. As always, I'm your host, Rich Canyunis. Hope everyone had a good sports weekend as we are getting set to close out the month of July. August right around the corner, which means we are gearing up for high school sports, especially that fall season in our backyard. So let's get you started with some local news and notes. And a very familiar name is Moving Schools and also Moving Regions. Congrats to Chris Bell, the new head coach of Laurel Hill. He will take the helm as the boys' basketball coach. Now you recall he was with Destin uh at the time that he signed on with Destin High School as well as their athletic director. He had 25 plus years of coaching experience, 163 47 record with his previous position with Florida Dream Travel Basketball. And he has a ton of ties within the community. We are going to get him on later on in the week. Military background, U.S. Air Force vet. And I can tell you right now, Laura Hill gets a great one because it's all about the leadership. It's been recognized internationally through a ton of programs at military bases worldwide, including Vance AFB, Osan AB, also Barksdale, Air Force Base. He also mentioned a couple of NBA draftees, including Bernard James during his coaching career. Now this Laurel Hill squad, very young, 11-12 in 2025, young team growing, maturing. But how about their guard, Preston Elliott? 6'4 guard, averaged about a 17 points a clip. They lost two to three seniors, but this kid is long athletic, rangey guard prospect. I believe he already has a couple of um colleges looking out and really interested in signing him. There's been some reports I have to substantiate and confirm. I believe he might have signed with a uh Little Rock, but we'll get a little more clarity on that. But he is a dominant, dominant kid. And listen, at the end of the day, it's all about getting these kids on the floor and engaged. He's creative with the dribble. He can be very difficult to guard and contain, put it on the floor with the left hand, dominant style, uh, and he's got some he's got some hops. So I mentioned this team, 11 and 12. Now they're going to be chasing Paxton, who's the best team in the region, a team that won 23 games last season. But I think Coach Bell is a perfect, perfect fit uh for this school because he's a basketball lifer. As I mentioned, 25 plus years knowing the sport of basketball. And now you're changing reasons, uh, regions a little bit. So uh, you know, sometimes not as much pressure if you're saying at Walton or Fort Walton, South Walton, or Destin, maybe it's a little different animal, Choctaw, a little different animal. So maybe he can kind of just um you know reignite uh that fire within. And it's always good change of scenery, and you have an opportunity to coach, you know, a different group of kids, right? So the best of luck to Coach Bell. We hope to get him on the Destin FM scoreboard show sometime uh this week. Sticking with the local theme, and how about that? Uh, do not look now, as we like to say. But the Wahoos are one of your hottest teams in the Panhandle when it comes to minor league baseball. They have been on a tear. Uh they'll start their set against Knoxville, the first of a four-game set. That'll be Tuesday, first pitch, 6 p.m. Red Hot offense is just humming. They won five of six against Columbus. They are playing some of their best baseball of the second half of the season, and it's great to see. And their pitching is really starting to come around. A couple shutouts, too, mixed in, and you love to see it. You love to see this team's offense starting to pull it together, and you certainly love to see the pitching do what they need to do. And listen, they got a big win on Sunday. You had another big win and another big game from Brandon Compton in that 42 win over Columbus on Sunday evening. And right now, 5-1 over that team in that series. They close out the regular season against Columbus, dominant 13-5 record. Right now, they are 51-44, 15-11 within the region. And Compton continues to make that big splash in Pensacola, responsible for driving in all four runs of the evening manich, his second Jack in as many days. Uh, he's putting up phenomenal, phenomenal numbers, and he's trailing a couple of other big boppers as well. Fenwick Triple with 13 bombs and Dylan Lewis 17 jacks outside the park. So it's all starting to come together for Pensacola at the right time. They're gonna have their hands full coming up with this series, but as I alluded to, they are playing some of their best baseball. Speaking of which, the trade deadline in MLB is right around the corner. It is there, it is among us, and I believe that Tampa is going to be a buyer as well. Now, right now, heading into Monday Night's action, they lead the Yanks by three games in the AL East. Boston had that great run of 14 straight. They have won nine out of their last 11. A little bit of a slide, you know, but again, that's to be expected after he had that type of uh run that they had. They have dropped two out of three. They lost uh the other day. They got blanked by the Blue Jays. They bounced back after that 6-0-0 loss. They uh counter with a 6-1 win. They got a tough series against a feisty A's team. They're seven and a half back the Boston Red Sox. So they put themselves in a little bit of contention when you talk about the wild card. But what's interesting is with the trade deadline right around the corner, is Miami gonna play, be a player? Is Atlanta going to be a player? Uh, what's gonna happen with uh the Rays? Uh also what's gonna happen with Detroit? Are they gonna make a decision when you're talking about one of the best pitchers in baseball in school bowl? Are they gonna trade him? Is he gonna be out there as well? Seattle's gonna be a player. I know the Yankees are definitely going to look to add a leverage reliever or two. Uh, there's talk that they're open to trading reliever, Camelio Doval. Uh, Texas looking to bolster up their pen. And there's I mentioned some of the other teams. You know, the Dodgers, uh, right now, you can argue the best team in baseball trying to win it again, which is just unheard of. That would be a three-peat back to back, and then a third year. Uh, but Tampa's gonna be a player. Uh, the Angels are gonna be sellers, Miami's gonna be buyers, the Phillies are gonna be buyers as well, and just to get you caught up to speed. One move that was made, the Red Sox acquired infielder Curtis Miad from the Washington Nats for left-handed pitcher Connolly Early. So, as far as the raise, look, I think that they, you know, obviously they're a good team. I think they are gonna be aggressive buyers. The trade deadline in baseball is August 3rd. Uh, they want to scour and see if they can add a little more top-tier pitching and upgrade a little bit of the offense and the bats and maybe bring in another big bopper. Uh, listen, they we know right now that Tariq Scuble is the guy that uh they're looking at. A lot of teams are. He's a two-time AL Cy Young award winner, could land with the Raves if the Tigers choose to deal him. You got Luis Arez, who's a second baseman from the Giants, Foster Griffin. The Rays and Aphillies have had scouts monitoring the national starting pitching during um his recent quality starts. So those teams that I mentioned, they might be players with the Rays. And then you have the Miami Marlins who are hanging around. The Marlins are hanging around in the NL when we're talking about the trade deadline. And I think they're shifting away from being buyers because you know what's happened is they they're they're they're they're hanging around, but yet they're not winning a lot of games. If now two things can both be true. The problem is they've hit a little bit of a skid, and it happens. I mean, it's not a little bit of a skid, it's a bad skid. They were five games over 500, they've dropped 12 straight. So does that pivot now as they fall behind Washington, 10.5 back of Atlanta in the NL East, chasing the Phillies as well, who are five and a half back. They had a bad series against San Diego. Are they going to now be sellers as opposed to buyers? And we talked a little bit about this last week. They were right there in the thick of things in the NL wildcard. Now you had, I mean, they went from being tied for the wild card three back. So they're still within shouting distance, even though they've dropped 12 straight, one of the worst, you know, streaks, losing streaks in the National League this season. But they're chasing the Cubs, the Phillies, the Diamondbacks, and Pittsburgh. So with the trade deadline right around the corner, we'll monitor that a little more when we go longer form with On Q later on this week. You can check out that on the YouTube channel at RichQ on Q. Always give me a follow. X-I-G at RichQ on Q. TikTok at RichQ on the mic as we are cruising along another edition of the Destin FM scoreboard show. Uh, some interesting news coming down. Not in our backyard, but a stone throwaway in Carolina. How about this? With all the nonsense going on with North Carolina, even last year, and Bill Belichick just first year on the sidelines. Now all of a sudden, their GM, believe it or not, yes, the college has a general manager. Mike Lombardi, a top aide to the hoodie, has been placed on paid administration lead by the university. UNC announced Monday that Lombardi's leave is effective immediately, did not disclose any other details. The Tar Heels open up their second season under Belichick in just under five weeks, August 29th, against TCU in Dublin, Ireland. And the timing of this is interesting, right? Because Lombardi joined Belichick at UNC December 2024. Obviously, reunites with the six-time Super Bowl champ, worked under Belichick with the Pats 2014-16, also with the Browns starting in 1987. He's faced a ton of scrutiny on multiple occasions during his time in Chapel Hill, including his boast in February when he said the Tar Hills consider ourselves the 33rd NFL team. Not sure what he was thinking there. Also made headlines last September when he informed the Pats that their scouts would be banned from across to the Tar Heels program. So, you know, again, UNC alienating a lot of people around them, especially Belichick and Lombardi. Had a dismal season, four and eight last season, did not have any players selected in this year's NFL draft. So go figure. But that is a story that is worth monitoring. Well, the king has landed. LeBron James decides two years. Philadelphia, 8 million. A lot of people are questioning why the hell is he going to the Philadelphia 76ers? Pretty simple. That is a medi-raid, a medium, a ready-made championship team. We're getting tongue-twisted on this uh edition of uh the Destin FM scoreboard. You've got Jalen Brown that day fleece from the Boston Celtics. You've got Tyrese Maxi, an all-star, VJ M. Comb, who's going to be entering his second year in the backcourt. And then you add in LeBron James plus an MVP and Joel Embiid, which should be no more excuses, by the way, for Embiid. But there's a lot of sediment in Miami. Why did LeBron choose the Sixers? And was there a little shadiness involved by the Philadelphia 76ers? There's a little conspiracy floating around by one Dan Levitard. And he's trying to connect the dots between LeBron James and Michael Rubin. And obviously, Rubin had stake in the Philadelphia 76ers. Uh Levitard, Miami Lifer, knows that franchise like the back of his hand, but kind of said, hey, look, we got to ask some questions, right? And I guess the argument is, well, why would you go somewhere cheaper? Uh, and why would you go somewhere cheaper if you were concerned about Joe and Bede's health? But he basically came out and said, quote, I'm gonna tell you as well that I'm just now beginning to get texts of the Heat are curious. How is it the Sixers did this? The text that I'm getting, or time for Pablo to see if he can find out. Of course, Libatard referring to his company's investigation show, Pablo Torre, finds out, because 3.94 million times two, eight for two years is about half of what the Heat were offering. So now you add in the stuff around the Fanatics, Michael Rubin, Michael Rubin leaving the 76ers, and his relationship with Embiid. Didn't love the fact that he was kind of sort stuck in limbo, some limits on that. The conflict of interest having a little equity in the Sixers. Now having equity obviously in Fanatics. Um, and maybe that does raise some eyebrows, but at the end of the day, I think LeBron realized I'm going somewhere cheaper. I don't need to be that, you know, alpha option, right? I don't think anyone, you know, considering that not a lot of people thought the Sixers were gonna be the favorite, but no one thought he would trust Joe Embiid's health as a punctuation on his career. He spoke to Embiid. I think Embiid's gonna probably come in in the best shape of his life, but the the bottom line is this you talk about the timeline and what Dan Levitard is throwing out there, it doesn't exactly line up, right? Because Rubin used a lot of money to acquire his stake in his Sixers, his hometown Sixers, for close to 20 years, right? Then you talk about the sports equipment, merchandise business. Um, there's a lot of teams out there and partnerships that are worthy of scrutiny, but uh stuff that went on with the Clippers and Kawhi. But I think this is kind of a eh that Rubin kind of entertained that business after divesting from the Philadelphia 76ers. James took the pay cut. He said from the start of the offseason money's not gonna guide his decision. So again, if he would have gone with Cleveland, we'd we'd be having the same conversation, right? So we love conspiracy theories, trust me, but I'm not buying it at all in this one. But the NBA is going to be a very interesting animal uh come October. And then finally, wrap it up. You know, as far as the NFL, we've been really diving in on cue with the win totals and the divisions. Um, so check out my channel for you Falcons fans out there, Saints fans out there, Bucks, Dolphins, Jacksonville. We just actually uncovered the AFC South with my NFL insider Lloyd Vance. Uh, and that's kind of an up-for-grabs division, especially if we're talking about a team within somewhat of our proximity, right? The Jacksonville Jags, it's gonna fall on the shoulders of one Trevor Lawrence. Now you lose a little bit in the ground game, no more ETN. They were a team that was very passing heavy last season, and I think Trevor Lawrence, who at times can run you know for his life because you got a shaky offensive line, they're gonna have to run the football first and foremost. Uh, they open up the season at home against Cleveland, go on the road against Denver, then the past Cincinnati, the Eagles, Texans, and the Colts. That is a tough stretch for Jacksonville to start the season, but we will lay out the win totals in the next couple weeks. If you want a little more in-depth analysis, check out on Q. Myself and Lloyd Vance, we broke it all down. Nothing really in the SEC to get into, um, in addition to the UNC college football news, maybe a little more later on the week. But as I mentioned, kind of the big news uh locally is uh Laurel Hill hiring uh Coach Bell. I told you we are gonna get him on the show. Uh a little conflict with the uh scheduling, but we will make that happen because I'm really curious, you know, what went in his um, you know, his thinking, right? His line of thinking where, okay, I'm gonna leave Destin, athletic uh director, also head coach over there, and now all of a sudden uh I'm going to um you know try something a little different. He knows the area in the community, uh like the back of his hand. And as I mentioned, he comes from that, you know, uh well-respected military background. And this is a team that's very young that has some playmakers. And I'm I'm fascinated to see what they can do, to be quite honest with you, uh come um, you know, uh October when they start playing. Because it's a young team, 12 wins, uh, and you know, you've got some players that you can build around. And that that school doesn't have a ton of sports: cross-country, baseball, basketball, softball, and volleyball. It's a small school that's looking for a little uh pub, you know, looking to try to um make some noise. And I think if they can assemble the right starting five and they get some depth, they only lost two to three seniors. They were four and two in the district. So they play in rural district one. And they started off last year four and one. They lost to open up the season against Lee Academy, but then they ripped off four straight. Then they lost two in a row, but they did get a win over Paxton Red Level. Um, they had a nice win over Northview, PCA, kind of faded down the stretch, and then lost to Jay 6152 uh to close things out. But I'll I'm interested to see how they uh respond. I love their their their nickname, the hobos, Laura Hobo. So it'll be fun catching up with Coach Bell. We'll do that later on.
