What's going on, everyone? Welcome into another edition of the Destin FM Scoreboard Show. As always, I'm your host, Rich Canoes. Hope everyone had a good sports week and you're enjoying your weekend. Um, again, with high school right around the corner, everyone going back to high school uh in about uh four weeks or so. We're gonna start ramping up uh a lot of the high school football talk to fall sports, and obviously in our backyard, uh really touch on a little bit on what's going on minor league wise. We'll hit on uh the national stage in a moment and then uh mix in not technically in our backyard, but some interesting news out of FAA uh FAU to close things out. But you know, we'll start uh, I think one of the hottest teams in minor league baseball right now, right in our neck of the woods, the Wahoos. I mean, how about this? I mean, they they've got, you know, as we go to air, they're wrapping up their series later today, and uh that's against Knoxville. I will say this. I've been uh, I don't want to say critical of the inconsistent play of this team, but give them their just due. Give them their just due because they had arguably one of their best wins of the second half of the season on Saturday night. Uh they come back, they rally out lasted Knoxville three to two and ten innings. And listen, the pen held up, the bullpen held up. And as I mentioned, coming into Sunday, today's action, they've won nine out of their last 11 games, four or five in this series, and now they sit a very comfortable 10 games above 500. Now, after this series, they'll hit the road for six against Biloxi next week. If you go back to the beginning of July, Biloxi took two or three from them. But you have to love the uh moxie and fight of this team because sometimes when the bats are not uh waking up and the bats are not helping you up, you know, a lot of times you need that pen. And um if you go back to Saturday's game, Brandon Jones opened it up two run Jack in the top of the third against Brooks Capel, who was 10th uh bomb of the season, uh for coming, by the way, during their most recent road trips um to his home state of Tennessee. So that's a nice little welcome back. So then you go and we fast forward a couple of innings in, and I thought that Orlando Ortiz, uh Meyer, um, you know, basically did an excellent job holding the Smoky scoreless, but in the bottom of the fourth, they were able to come back. Uh they got a uh two-run jack. Uh that was a homer against Ariel Armas against reliever Josh HK. So he was pulled. So Ortiz Mayer was pulled. Uh that was pretty much all the damage that they did against the bullpen because Heychka got through three innings. That was his longest appearances, stretch in more than two seasons, kept the game tied, going into the late innings. The uh Wahoos lead the bases uh uh covered, loaded in the seventh and eighth, and then effective relief from Nigel Belgrave, Coldie uh Martin. And now we go into extra innings in the top of the tenth. Wameth is single against Tyler Schaufer to advance, placed runner Christian Hernandez to third. Um, you know, again, you got the speezer there. Compton comes up, already collected three singles, already in the game, scorching grounder to second base, turned into a double play, but also brought home the go-ahead run. Now you got a three-to-two lead. Martin comes out in the bottom of the tenth, worked around a leadoff single to Drew Browser, retired the next three and end the game. And now, for the fourth time in five games in this series, the losing team basically left a tying run at third base, making the final out. So they're gonna wrap up that series. Uh, two o'clock Eastern Time, one o'clock Central Time. It's a nice little streak, and uh they're rolling right now, really jockeying and putting themselves in an excellent position when we start to talk about the standings and the playoffs. Now, very busy weekend in baseball in the minors because you talk about you know the rich getting richer. How about with the trade deadline in baseball in MLB uh scheduled for Monday? Monday, August 3rd. Uh, you got the deadline uh 3 p.m. and the Dodgers over the weekend shock in the baseball world. I mean, they've done it again. The rich get richer, they turn around and they get a generational ace. They finally bring in their guy that they were coveting, just adding to a ridiculous starting rotation. They acquire Tigers ace to reek school bowl. And this is a move that you're talking a generational pitcher, reigning back-to-back AL, Cy Young award winner. And what did they basically give up? I mean, the Tigers, they get in return three prospects. You get an outfielder, Zahir Um Hope, a right-hander, River Rhine, and Brady Smith, according to Jeff Passon of ESPN. Uh Dodgers, you might as well enjoy it, man, because everyone knows there's an impending lockout, but they're trying to make it three straight. They're already back-to-back defending World Series champs. You got a 29-year-old who was a pending free agent. And now you have arguably the best rotation, hands down in the sports. Yamamoto, who's making a very strong case for Cy Young of his own. You got Blake Snell, another former Cy Young award winner. Oh, by the way, Shoei Otani. Oh, by the way, Tyler Glass now. And I mean, and they're all rounding in the form. So the Dodgers not only are running away with the NLS, but they are hands down the favorites to win the World Series again. Just making a mockery of what's going on. Uh, they're 10 and a half up over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yeah, they did drop two or three as they uh close out their series against the Boston Red Sox later on this evening. But prior to, I mean, listen, they uh took two or three from the Phillips, they took two or three from the Mets, they took two or three from Seattle. They have just been rolling, and uh this is just unbelievable. Their odds now to win the World Series improved to plus 190 from 190 to plus 150 after acquiring school ball. Uh and now their odds to win the NL sit at minus 110, so very short odds. They're gonna run away with it. Uh sticking in our backyard, Miami. I'll get you some trade deadline rumors in a second. And then the Tampa Bay Rays, and we'll get into Atlanta Braves as well. So we'll start with Tampa Bay. Uh, Tampa Bay, they're gonna be very aggressive ahead of the trade deadline. They have to go after another starting pitcher. They need some catching help. They would love to get an infield impact bats. Uh, they have a very loaded farm system, so they could be players when it when we talk about you know the biggest uh going after the biggest targets. Um, as far as the Marlins, so the latest is talks between the Red Sox and the Marlins on shortstop out of Lopez didn't go anywhere uh and are dead at this point. That's per Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. He also was adding that uh fish are understandably seeking a package headline. They're looking for elite prospects in order to part with the remaining three plus seasons of controlled on Lopez. So he's 27. He's one of the best waiver pickups in recent memory. Blue Jays and the Giants both designated him for assignment back in 2024. Miami comes and they reel him in. No pun intended. They scooped him up, use him as a utility player. His role kind of grew. First settled in, and now he's turning into a very slick fielding, but light hitting second baseman. Then he's flipped around infield positions with then shortstop Xavier Edwards and a move that worked out for both players. I mean, he's delivering light offense, a production premium defense last year, and his bat has absolutely gone off and erupted. I mean, it's it's amazing how sometimes a little bit of a change of scenery can really help a player. Uh, and also if they are in the right situation. I mean, we've seen it time and time again. You get yourself in the right situation, you've got uh some good bats around you, you're absolutely going to thrive. But yeah, I mean, this kid uh he's played well this season. He's played really well. His batting average sits at 322. He's cracked nine home runs, he's got 139 hits, he's on pace to collect 20 um 20 hits, probably hit around 20 home runs. The batting average you'll love. He's driven in 51. He also is very fast on the base paths. Uh 27-year-old swipe 22 bases already. So uh it would be a nice pickup for any team. So we'll kind of monitor that uh as the uh you know the trade deadline is around the corner. And if anything breaks, I'm sure you'll hear it during our Dustin FM scoreboard updates during the mornings Monday to Friday. As far as the uh Atlanta Braves, so right now, look, uh I guess, you know, if you're talking about big-time frontline starting pitcher, I don't know if it's gonna happen, but at least they got their beak wet a little bit. Uh you acquire Atlanta acquired outfield Erlain Thomas. He's coming to the Braves. Thomas, left-handed pitcher. Bailey Falter were acquired from the Royals in exchange for minor league right-hander uh Lucas Braun. He's been the Braves number eight prospect. Left-hander Colton Horson. Also in that on Saturday night. And the Braves are, again, uh they're taking advantage of a bad NL East. They're taking advantage of a Phillies team that cannot get out of their own way. Slugger Bryce Harper pretty much already called out the GM, the ownership group, Dan Broski to make a move come Monday. The Phillies now are eight back. Remember, they had this nice little tear, but offensively, they stink. I mean, they're they're plus-minus, they're minus 12 run differential. And the Braves are plus 106. The Braves are 7-3 in their last 10. They have one four straight. They're gonna run away with the NOEs because Marlins aren't catching them, Washington's not catching them, the Mets are one of the worst teams in baseball. And then you got the Phillies. Now, if you are a Braves fan, you are taking advantage too of a little scheduling quirk, right? Because uh they just they just swept, well, they took three out of four thus far against Washington. They'll play that fourth and final game. They're wrapped out that series 135 today. Then they have three against Miami. They'll get tested against Yankees, but then they get New York, Arizona, Minnesota. You get a squeeze in makeup date on the road against Chicago, Milwaukee. Come August 25th in a couple weeks. Uh, they've got three big ones against the Dodgers. We'll see where this Braves team is at. But if the Phillies don't do anything offensively, they don't pick up another bat to help that lineup. The Braves should easily run away with DNL East, at least by 10.5, 12 games. So a little look at what's going on baseball-wise with the trade deadline right around the corner. Uh, let me mix in some uh other little news and notes as well. Oh, by the way, let me just also just reiterate with that Braves move. So uh Thomas, uh Falter, that's who Atlanta gets. The Royals turnaround, they get Braun, and they get Hort uh Holton. So they get a lefty and they get a righty uh do the Kansas City Royals. Uh, if you are a hoops fan, little interesting WNBA news. If you haven't watched, I've been talking a lot of the WNBA, Indiana Fever, Caitlin Clark, and everything going on with this Goofy League on my daily show on Q. Uh, you can check that out as well. Um, and we have been talking a lot about the refereeing, the officiating, uh, you know, the lack of uh really transparent media, just kind of you got to move away from these hidden agendas and these biases and these narratives. But with all that being said, Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever starting to make a push for MVP. And uh, interesting enough, the trade deadline, which some, if you follow the sport, had a little bit of buzz here and there, a little bit of buzz here and there, but I thought it was very interesting, a a fascinating move with the trade deadline right around the corner. That the Sparks have traded all-star, five-time all-star Kelsey Plum, who's got an expiring contract, who's getting older, who's battled some injuries. They shift their off to Phoenix for Monique uh McCani, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 second rounder. And you look at a move like this, like if you just kind of put it in, you know, basketball terms, right? We always talk about basketball terms. You kind of question why the heck would you make a move like this? It really does not make any sense. It really doesn't. And especially when you're talking about players that have expiring contracts to Mercury or six games out of the last playoff spot. You got 14 games to go. They traded a rental player whose contract is up, and they gave up a first-round pick in an absolutely stacked and loaded 2027 class. So, right now, that tells you Plum is a vet. She's got to sign an extension. If not, then you probably could have gotten a lot more for the player. But we're coming down the stretch run of the WNBA season. Uh, NBA offseason, we've touched on it. I mean, it's kind of quieted down since all the movement, the trades, Brown, you know, Kawhi, LeBron, uh, you know, the uh Giannis. I mean, the list goes on and on and on. I I think we've we've banged that drum ad nauseum, and we'll start to kind of creep into what's going on with college football and the NFL. I did want to make a point of reference. Uh, FAU, which obviously not in our backyard, but I found this a very interesting hire. Josh McCown was hired Friday as Florida Atlantic Vice President, NAD. Now he's filling the position vacated six weeks ago. Brian White left the Alles. He took over Virginia Tech's athletic department. McCown's going to be formally introduced August 7th. And how about this? You know, you talk about, forget about his playing days, playing career, because he could be a head coach, right? Journeyman quarterback, very smart, well connected. He is an accomplished fundraiser. I mean, he is an absolutely accomplished fundraiser. And sometimes it's fascinating. It is, man. It is fascinating when you think of like what uh these guys can do in the backyard, right? So uh he he has done an excellent job of cultivating his uh talents, right? And I'm not talking about the Josh McCown that played in the NFL. See if you guys are paying attention a little bit on this uh Destin FM scoreboard show. Sometimes you guys just don't pay attention, and sometimes I gotta call you out. So that's why I'm sure someone might tweet at me, but it's Macau in M-C-C-O-W-A-N, but we got you. Uh he's comes to FAU. He was three years in Mississippi State. He was deputy athletic director of the Bulldogs, and FAU said he raised more than 173 million. That's the most lucrative three-year total in school's history. So I think that's fantastic. And I think they have someone that can kind of take this university to the next level. Uh, sure. Would have been nice if they actually hired the other Josh McCall. Yeah, but it doesn't work like that. It doesn't work like that. Uh you know, it's kind of funny. He actually, you know, it's funny because he is in the NFL as a passing game coordinator, but two different Joshes. Excellent job with FAU. Circling back uh to the uh local front, as I said, kind of a quiet week in high school sports. We're gonna start ramping up. We put in some calls to grab some of these head coaches prior to uh the first uh week of the high school football season. And I know it's a little different in our backyard, you know, along the Panhandle, uh, the Emerald Coast. Some teams get a little jump in mid to late August. Some teams and other regions and districts might get their game starting right around September when everyone and all the kids go back to school. Uh, but we will definitely go very heavy, hyperlocal with the Destin FM scoreboard show. As I mentioned last week, a kind of teaser. Um, we're in talks with the station right now, and we believe uh it'll get finalized where we will have an on-cue version, basically an Emerald Coast on Q version, where we will go more college pro and the Destin FM scoreboard is going to continue to be very hyper local high school sports and JUCO and colleges around our backyard. So um, and that basically means, you know, we'll mix in a little SEC here and there on both shows respectively. But we wanted to pop on, you know, kind of get you up to speed what's going on in MLB, give a little credit to the Wahoos who are playing some really good baseball, you know, the WNBA trade, FAU news with the other Josh McCowan. Um, nothing really too much to report on the NBA with Summer League, really nothing to monitor. All the dominoes have fallen. And then as you know, the NFL, we did touch on Baker Mayfield with his contract issues. We did touch on the Atlanta Falcons a little bit. We touched on the New Orleans Saints. Uh uh Sean Payton's gonna induct Drew Brees. He'll he'll um um induct him into the uh Pro Football Hall of Fame. I think that's pretty neat. I mean, obviously, that that's kind of a no-brainer when you think about it, right? I mean, those two were uh uh you know joined at the hip, were they not? Sean Payton and uh Drew Brees. And, you know, sticking with the New Orleans Saints, just for a second, if you've kind of followed along the offseason, well, this just dropped about seven or eight hours ago. Uh, one of their veteran guards, Andrew Speet, was a three-time Pro Bowl selection over 11 NFL seasons. He's announced his retirement from the NFL. So there you go. There's uh Saints are going to be looking for a little bit of depth, um, but we just wanted to uh give you that. Last season, obviously, he was with Pittsburgh. He played his first nine seasons with the Saints. So uh again, you know, some of these players decide to move on uh after X, Y, and Z. And uh look, I mean, he he's a decent player, Pro Bowl nods, but we always like to kind of give you if it's current andor former NFL news regarding the teams in our backyard, which really are Atlanta, New Orleans, right? Because of where we're at. And then we do touch on Tampa, Jacksonville, and Miami. Uh, you know, I did, if you are curious, I did talk a little more about Cleveland because of the Deion Sanders going to training camp with Shador Sanders and meeting with Todd Monkey. I gave you an extended thought and version on that on cue. So definitely check that out as well. So, with that being said, you got a little minor league baseball. You got MLB later today, trade deadline coming up. Let me set it for you. Phillies and the O's, Nats and the Braves. That'll be a 135 first pitch. Uh Braves or the Fakes and the Matthews, Cardinals and the Blue Kings, D Backs and the Guardians, White Sox and the Rays. Uh, Miami takes on a struggling Met squad. That is 19 games under 500. Pittsburgh and the Reds, Rangers and the Astros, Yankees and the Cubs. Yankees have struggled uh of late. And I'm not going to say they're going to fire Boone during the season. I don't see it, but he might be on borrowed time. Casey and the Rockies, Brewers and the Angels, Tigers and the Athletics, Twins, Mariners, Giants, Pods, and the Red Sox, and now the absolutely stacked Dodgers, who are 69 and 42. They will meet 721st pitch. Sunday night baseball. That'll be on NBC Peacock. You got the WNBA, you got three on the docket today. Uh the Lynx have won nine straight. They take on the Fever, who have won five straight, and of course, Caitlin Clark, Sparks and the Fire, Sun and the Wings. And then, as we mentioned, uh, we'll keep you posted on anything going on in those trade deadlines, respectively. So, as promised, we will try to grab some of these coaches over the next week or so. We will definitely, definitely really start to look at, I guess if you want to call it the preseason high school football rankings and ratings, and uh, you know, those teams that are maybe trending up, maybe teams that are trending down, we will definitely dive into that uh next week and over the next several weeks.
